MOSCOW–Kazakhstan lowered its grain harvest and export forecast on Tuesday, blaming heavy rainfall during the planting campaign.

The agriculture ministry cut its forecast for the 2015 grain harvest by 2.3% to 17.3 million metric tons.

The Central Asian country is now expected to export 7 million tons in the 2015-2016 marketing year, down from a previous forecast of 8 million tons.

Too much rain during the time of planting affected crop growth, the ministry said. Grain now stands in good condition on just 60% of the planted area, it added.

Between the beginning of the harvest in July and Sept. 14, Kazakhstan harvested 6.9 million tons of grain on 6.3 million hectares at an average yield of 1.09 tons/ha.

This time last year, 6.7 million tons had been harvested at an average yield of 1.07 tons/ha.

Last year Kazakhstan harvested 17.2 million tons of grain, 76% of which was wheat. It exported 6.6 million tons in the 2014-2015 marketing year.

Malaysian palm-oil prices ended the session lower after Chinese markets fell Tuesday, paring gains made the previous day on news the government would invest billions of dollars to boost the economy and financial markets. Data from SGS and Intertek earlier in the session showed Malaysia’s palm-oil exports for the Sept. 1-15 period rose from a month earlier. SGS and Intertek are standards and certification firms that provide benchmark data on Malaysian crude-palm-oil exports. The Bursa Malaysia’s January crude-palm-oil contract last traded 50 ringgit ($11.63) lower at 2280.00 ringgit a ton.

HONG KONG–Malaysia’s palm-oil exports during the Sept. 1-15 period are estimated to be up 3.6% month-over-month at 756,429 metric tons, cargo surveyor SGS (Malaysia) Bhd. said Tuesday.

The estimate is lower than the 765,322 tons estimated by another cargo surveyor, Intertek Agri Services, earlier in the day.
