MOSCOW–Russia grain harvest picked up pace in September after a delayed start to the harvesting season and rainy weather.

Russia grain harvest since the harvest began around mid-June to Sept. 10 was 80.7 million tons on 32 million hectares with the average yield of 2.52 tons a hectare, the agriculture ministry reported Friday. On the same date last year the harvest was 83 million tons on 30.8 million hectares with the average yield of 2.69 tons/ha.

The ministry also said wheat harvest to date was 53.9 million tons on 19.4 million hectares with the average yield of 2.77 tons/ha. On the same date last year wheat harvest was 51.1 million tons on 16.7 million ha with the average yield of 3.05 tons/ha.

Barley harvest to date was 15.7 million tons on 6.8 million ha with the average yield of 2.32 tons/ha. On the same date last year barley harvest was 18.7 million tons on 7.6 million ha with the average yield of 2.46 tons/ha.

Corn harvest to date was 1.5 million tons on 289,600 ha with the average yield of 5.02 tons/ha. On the same date last year corn harvest was 1.7 million tons on 329,800 ha with the average yield of 5.15 tons/ha.

The agriculture ministry estimates this year’s total grain harvest at 102.9 million metric tons. Last year Russia harvested 105.3 million tons of grain in bunker weight. The ministry expects wheat harvest this year at 59.8 million tons compared with 59.7 million tons last year. Barley harvest this year is expected at 17.4 million tons compared with 20.4 million tons last year. Corn harvest is expected at 13 million tons compared with 11.3 million tons last year.

This year’s grain harvest in Ukraine, which saw a slow start because of adverse weather conditions, has picked up pace and is now ahead of last year’s volumes, according to the agriculture ministry.

The ministry said late Thursday that on Sept. 10 Ukraine harvested 37.71 million metric tons of grain on 10.132 million hectares, or 72% of the total area to be harvested, with the average yield of 3.7 tons a hectare. The ministry didn’t give last year’s figures for comparison but, according to its past reports, on the same date last year the harvest was reported at 36.4 million tons on just over 10 million hectares with the average yield of 3.6 tons/ha.

This year the agriculture ministry expects the grain harvest to fall to about 60.5 million tons from 63.8 million tons in 2014 because of adverse weather conditions and political instability.

The pace of grain exports in Ukraine is outstripping last year, despite the slow start to harvest and general political instability in the country, thanks to greater grain stocks.

The agriculture ministry reported Friday that from July 1, the start of this marketing year, and Sept. 10 Ukraine exported 6.955 million metric tons of grain, compared with 6.22 million tons on the same date last year.

The ministry said it was in constant contact with grain traders to ensure there was no misbalance between grain export and grain supply in the domestic market. It said there are sufficient grain stocks in the country to prevent domestic shortages, even after taking into account the strong pace of exports.

The total volume of exports to date included 3.424 million tons of wheat, 2.184 million tons of barley, 1,332 tons of corn and 15,000 tons of minor grains.

This year the agriculture ministry expects the grain harvest to fall to about 60.5 million tons from 63.8 million tons in 2014 because of adverse weather conditions and political instability.

It also expects grain exports of 36.83 million tons in the 2015-16 marketing year, compared with 34.805 million tons in 2014-15.
