MOSCOW–Russia’s grain export slowed in the week to Sept. 9 due to falling prices on the international grain market, according to the agriculture ministry.

The ministry said Russia exported 1.019 million metric tons of grain between Sept. 2 and Sept. 9, compared with 1.275 million tons in the previous week, citing the current situation on the global market as the main reason for the decline in the pace of exports, and particularly the sharp fall in wheat prices.

Since the beginning of the current marketing year–July 1 to Sept. 9–Russia exported 6.8 million tons of grain, 22.5% less than in the corresponding period in the previous marketing year. The total volume of exports included 5.3 million tons of wheat, 300,000 tons of barley, 204,000 tons of corn and 141,000 tons of minor grains.

Russian grain exports were off to a slow start at the beginning of the new marketing year–July 1 2015-June 30 2016–compared with a year earlier, because of a slow start to the harvest due to poor weather conditions. Grain exporters are also complaining that the grain export duty, recently imposed by the government, is slowing down the pace of exports because it complicates processing export documentation to a degree. The government has promised to revise the export duty in the next few days.

The grain export duty was imposed as of July 1 and provides a duty of 50% of the contract price minus RUB5,500 per ton, but not less than RUB50 per ton. The agriculture ministry said Thursday it had proposed to the government to reduce the export duty to the contract price to minus RUB6,500-7,500, while the minimal duty of RUB50/ton should be abolished.

The agriculture ministry estimates this year’s total grain harvest at 102.9 million metric tons, down from last year’s 105.3 million tons in bunker weight.

Malaysian Palm Oil Board data continues to paint a bearish picture of the price of the commodity, especially the recent downturn in demand from key markets China and India, says Capital Economics commodities economist Hamish Smith: “Although the price of palm oil has bounced back from a six-and-a-half-year low at the end of August, we think that prices are likely to fall back again as increasing production and stocks around the seasonal peak puts downward pressure on prices.” Earlier in the session, the MPOB showed crude-palm-oil production in August was the highest on record and that demand in China and India was significantly weaker in August. However, Bursa Malaysia’s January crude palm oil contract ended the session up 43 ringgit at MYR2,157 ($500) a ton.

HONG KONG–Malaysia’s palm oil exports fell 0.3% sequentially to 1.61 million metric tons in August, the Malaysian Palm Oil Board said Thursday.

The country exported 1.612 million tons of palm oil in July.

In its monthly report, the MPOB said crude-palm-oil output rose 13% to 2.05 million tons in August. CPO output totaled 1.8 million tons in July.

Palm oil stocks totaled 2.49 million tons at the end of August, up 10% from the previous month.

The following are details of the August crop data and revised numbers for July, issued by MPOB:
